You can apply to be a volunteer at  the National Archives and Records Administration, either at the Washington, D.C. office or your nearest Regional Archive, here. Minimum of 100 hours per year over 2 years. 

Adopt a Page a USGenWeb

Volunteer to "adopt" a page for a state or locality, or to help with special archives projects at USGenWeb. Volunteers are also needed for record lookups. More info here.
